Surviving Their Teen Years: 4 Tips for Parenting a New Teen

No matter what you do, eventually your kids are going to grow up. And while you can lament the loss of being your baby's best friend as they get older, you're going to have to learn how to let them go their own way.

That said, as teenagers, they still have a lot of growing to do and will need you there to support and guide them into the adult world.

Need a little help figuring out how to deal with the silent treatment, shouting matches, and endless messaging? We've got you covered.

Here are four must-have tips on parenting a teen that will help you navigate some of the most tumultuous times in your child's life.

1. Respect Their Privacy

How would you feel if your mom or dad came over and started snooping around in your stuff?

You'd probably be a little miffed — and rightfully so. Adults don't just value privacy and boundaries — we need them. And while you may still think of your teens as your babies, they're on their way to adulthood and need a little space too.

While it may be tempting to rifle around to make sure your kids aren't doing anything they aren't supposed to, try to avoid it.

By giving your teen their space, you're letting them know that you trust and respect them. And, if your kids feel like you have confidence in them, they'll be more likely to come to you if they get into trouble.

2. Set Rules

While you want to give your kids their privacy, they're still growing and will probably make a few bad judgment calls from time to time. Which, is why you must lay a few ground rules.

These rules can include everything from required chores to guidelines about homework. Remember you aren't trying to control your kids. Your goal when setting rules like this should always be to teach your teen's healthy habits they can continue to use after they enter the adult world.

When your teen starts going out with friends, a good rule of thumb is to use the "three Ws" rule. Your teen needs to tell you where they're going, who they're going to be with, and, most importantly, when they're going to be back.

3. Support Their Interests

One of the best things you can do when raising a teenager is to support their interests — even if you're not the biggest fan of what those interests might be.

Teenagers know what they like and what they don't like, and while you can introduce them to new things, you can't force them to develop an interest in them.

So, when they do find something they're passionate about, it's your responsibility as a parent to foster that interest.

4. Be the Adult You Want Them to Become

Finally, raising a teenager can be extremely difficult. It can be very tempting to respond to every eye-roll and snarky comeback with a shouting match. After all, you love them and only want the best for them — why can't they see that?

If your teen breaks a rule or behaves badly, you must teach them that actions have consequences. That said, screaming at them will only teach them to respond to adversity with anger.

Remember, your goal isn't to scare your kids into submission — it's to teach them. When reacting to bad behavior, take a breath and respond the way you would like to see them act if they were the adult.

And, if you've made a mistake, don't ignore it. Take responsibility for your actions, apologize, and move forward.
